Sign a PDF with Preview

One of the features often underused in Preview is the ability to add your signature to a PDF document, and it is fairly simple to do, providing you have a webcam, just follow the instructions below

Open Preview (located in /Applications)

Then click on Preview in the menu bar at the top of the screen and click on Preferences

You will have a few tabs, but we want to use the Signatures one on the end, so click on that

If you don’t have any then the window will be empty so just click on the Create Signature button

a new window will open, with instructions on how to do this, for clarity I will list them here

Write your signature on a piece of white paper in black ink

then hold the signature up to the webcam so that the bottom of the signature rests on the blue line

once you are happy with the preview then click the Accept button

Now, once that has been saved you will no longer have the Create Signature button, so to create a new one just click on the + button at the bottom of the window

Finally, the point of the whole thing, adding the signature to a PDF document, which is done as so

Open a PDF document in Preview

click on the Annotate button (the one that looks like a pencil in the toolbar)

around the middle of the Annotate toolbar you will have a button with a small x and a big S which looks like this x S

there will be an down arrow next to it so click on that and choose the signature to add

Once selected you will then need to go to the area of the document that you wish to add it to, and click on that point

you will then be presented with a little signature image which you can then drag the edges of the box to correctly size the signature

and thats it, you’re done
